The Old Forge

The Old Forge

Apart from walking, fishing and several other outdoor activities there is little to do in Inverie apart from relaxing in Britain's remotest pub, the Old Forge Inn. This single-story inn next door to Knoydart Estate Office was formally a forge until the Second World War when it became a Working Mens' Club then in 1981, a pub. Some locals still refer to it as 'The Club'.
The Old Forge is open all day and enjoys the relaxed licensing laws that apply to Scotland.
Nights at the Old Forge can be lively with impromptu music sessions and customers have included celebrities. It's isolation has brought many interesting characters here. There is the tale of a stag night groom, shackled to a ball and chain with key posted to fiancé who managed to climb a local Munro (mountain over 3000 feet high).

The Bar

In another incident, a large party of people trying to protect the son of a celebrity from a fanatical religious sect came over to Knoydart. They were able to enjoy a pint in the pub while the lad wandered around going nowhere fast while he was being 'deprogrammed'.

The Old Forge is well worth a visit even if it is just for a day trip. After disembarking from the morning ferry there is ample time to enjoy a meal and a pint here and explore the village before the ferry returns and takes you up Loch Nevis to view wildlife before returing to Mallaig at tea-time.

There is no accommodation at the Old Forge but you can stop in the Pierhead Guest House or Hostel or camp behind the village hall.
