Tobermory

| The brightly painted
buildings of Tobermory. The Mishnish Hotel is one of the
colourful buildings that line the waterfront in the small
town of Tobermory, the capital of the island. The
population of Tobermory is less than 700, comprising of a
quarter of the island's people. The town has several
facilities, including a Co-Op shop, an electrical
appliance shop, three public houses, a Post Office,
tourist information and a Youth Hostel. There is plenty
of free parking available in the Town. |
Accommodation
Wild camping in the woods at the end of town. |
Much of the town's income
relies on tourism and therefore there a plenty of guest
houses and bed and breakfasts with prices starting from
around £10. Unfortunately, some of them will not let you
return from the pub late at night although Roddy's may be
an exception. The Youth Hostel offers cheap accommodation
but again, they will not let you take advantage of
Scotland's relaxed licensing hours as they close the
doors at 10pm. The Mishnish Hotel offers superior bed and breakfast accommodation as does the Western Isles Hotel which stands proud over Tobermory. It is worthwhile checking out the ad at the top of this page. |
| Another good way to visit
Tobermory is by camping. During 1997 and also on a one
off visit some years before I stopped at Newdale Camp
Site which is on the Dervaig road, a mile and a quarter
outside town. While it contains the necessary facilities
and provides shelter, it involves a half hour walk into
town. Wild camping is possible in the woods at the end of town, where the main road descends past the distillary. The laws on trespass are different in Scotland and tents are tolerated there. During the Isle of Mull Music Festival the woods become a tent city. If you do camp there please no noise, fires and ghetto blasters. Also don't block the road when you park above the woods. |
The Community
|
Tobermory has the
atmosphere of a small town about it and there is a great
sense of community. The people are friendly, helpful and
sociable and crime is virtually non-existant. The regular
visitor who obeys a few simple rules and is prepared to
fit in will be made welcome upon each visit and even
become almost part of the community. The Aros Hall is one of the main community centres for the town, but it is at the Mishnish where things really come to life. Looking down on Tobermory |
